Efforts to develop a sustainable community have granted UC Davis position #3 in the world ranking for campus sustainability. In April 2017, the International Center made its debut as a LEED Certified Gold building. But, what does LEED Certified Gold mean? The United States Environmental Protection Agency created the LEED rating system (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) to promote the constructions of buildings –from residential to commercial– that positively impact the well-being of people and the planet.
Traditionally Intensive English Programs (IEP) are for adult learners to advance and accelerate their career through participation in a rigorous English language curriculum. High school students can participate in a similar course of study through “English youth programs.” These programs often balance instruction with other social and cultural components to create a more age-related experience.
Baseball holds a meaningful place in American culture, and for International English Program student Sou Koguma, a true American experience meant that he would visit the country’s most emblematic baseball stadiums. Sou has walked through the historic entrance of Chicago’s Wrigley Field and cheered alongside New York’s Yankees fans at Yankee Stadium. Sou’s interest in baseball and ambition took him places he had always dreamed of seeing.
Being nicknamed “Bike Capital USA” means that Davis is filled with thousands of new students and bicycles every year. Unfortunately, that also makes it a target for bicycle theft. As the English Language classes gear up for summer quarter at UC Davis, across the globe, programs are winding down for the year. On Friday, the UC Davis/ISA Tokyo Center classroom passed out the last certificates of the academic year and wished the students well on the next steps of their academic journeys.
“I just wanted to cross the Golden Gate Bridge by bike,” said student Ryotaro Sakaguchi. “My friend told me one could cross it by bike, so this is why I chose to do it.”
Youth from two of the top six schools in China’s largest metropolis, Guangzhou, recently visited UC Davis to study and experience university life in the United States. As part of the Custom Youth Programs at UC Davis Continuing and Professional Education - international, middle and high school students participate in a variety of academically rigorous research, college preparation and English language programs on the UC Davis campus.
This spring, Chinese, South Korean, Japanese, and Hong Kong students from UC Davis’ Global Study Program have joined UC Davis undergraduate students in an East Asian Studies Research Seminar. The first offering of its kind, this course is a collaboration between International programs at UC Davis Continuing and Professional Education and the East Asian Studies Department.

47 secondary school teachers from the District of Bogotá, Colombia came to UC Davis on November 4, to study teaching methodology and take courses designed to enhance their English language skills. Over the duration of their four-week program, they attended classes on campus and took part in field trips to the Language Academy of Sacramento, the State Capital, Old Sacramento and San Francisco.
