UC Davis Hosts Delegate of Taiwanese Educators
Taiwan is on the road to becoming a bilingual nation. As a major trading nation and a key player in global supply chains, the demand for Taiwanese professionals with English-language proficiency has increased. To boost the competitiveness of Taiwanese citizens entering the job market, the government launched the Bilingual 2030 policy, leading Taiwanese educators to research how to bring English into their classrooms.
UC Davis International and Access Programs, in collaboration with Fulbright Taiwan leaders Dr. Randall Nadeau and Kelly Chang, hosted a delegation of nearly 50 Taiwanese teachers and representatives from these institutions:
- Taiwan University
- National Taiwan University of Science and Technology
- National Kaohsiung University of Science and Technology
- National Central University
- National Cheng Kung University
- National Penghu University of Science and Technology
- National Taipei University of Technology
- Taipei Municipal Minquan Junior High School
- New Taipei City Government
The delegate visited Sacramento County Office of Education to learn about the county’s multilingual education programs and effective implementation strategies, in addition to other topics. Taiwanese schoolteachers also visited a Spanish-English dual language immersion school and participated in a week-long TEFL training program at UC Davis.
While at UC Davis, the delegate also had the opportunity to take advantage of being at the top-ranked university in the nation for sustainability by learning about various sustainability projects across campus and visiting some of UC Davis’ world-class facilities. The delegates visited Bodega Bay Marine Laboratory, West Village, Institute of Transportation Studies and Great Bear Winery. They also participated in presentations and discussions with experts from Working Lands Innovation Center, Institute of the Environment, Climate Adaptation Research Center, California Lighting Technology Center and Office of UC Davis Sustainability.
“Much will follow from this visit,” said Anneli Adams, Associate Dean of International and Access Programs at UC Davis. “We are thrilled to continue collaborations together and grateful to the delegates for choosing UC Davis Continuing and Professional Education as their partner in this meaningful endeavor.”
