Volunteer Experiences and Leadership Opportunities

Students at the intermediate levels and higher may choose an elective class called Volunteer Experiences. Students can volunteer their time in community organizations—mostly schools and nonprofit organizations—where they observe how people work together to achieve common goals. These experiences help international students gain a deeper understanding of U.S. culture and society, as well as develop their leadership skills.

Students keep journals of their observations and discuss issues such as workplace culture, effectiveness of meetings, decision-making, teamwork, customer relationships, marketing and more. Here are just a few of the areas in which students can volunteer and gain valuable work experience:

  • Education
  • Environment
  • Health care
  • Social work
  • Culture
  • Animal care
  • Youth and recreation

If students wish to explore other areas of interest, UC Davis’ Division of Continuing and Professional Education can assist them in locating a volunteer position to suit their individual needs.
