Elevated Learning
International Programs Collaborates with UC Davis Model UN Team
One of the long-term benefits of studying at UC Davis International Programs is learning to be a global citizen. This is particularly true for students studying the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals, (SDGs), which many of our programs incorporate into their curriculum. Through collaborations with the UC Davis Model United Nations (MUN) Team, we are able to elevate our students’ awareness and understanding of current issues around the world. This quarter, students in our Academic Engagement Program and students from Kyoto Otani High School participating in a custom program will be able to benefit from partnering with the UC Davis MUN team.
“This collaboration is a way to extend what our students are learning about SDGs and allows them to share perspectives with UC Davis students who are passionate about United Nations work,” says Elizabeth Morrison, assistant director of curriculum and development at UC Davis International and Access Programs. Students get a chance to expand their knowledge about the United Nations and its role in the world and hear about SDGs from an American perspective. “It also gives our students another opportunity to practice their English in a meaningful way with native speakers,” adds Morrison.
The benefit of this collaboration is mutual. According to Kristin Mifsud, UC Davis Model UN president, “Since many individuals in our club are international relations majors and really into politics, it’s important for us to understand different viewpoints and perspectives.” She adds that interacting with people from other countries isn’t an experience they get often. “Just getting a chance to interact with people from other countries has been an amazing experience for our members,” says Mifsud.
The biggest value of this collaboration, for both UC Davis MUN students and international students, is the opportunity to broaden their horizons. Mifsud says, “Having a different perspective on international issues just enriches the conversation.”
