How the Global Education Pathway Program Empowered Grace to Thrive in U.S. Higher Education
“California is my dream place to study,” said Grace, a student from China who recently completed the Global Academic Pathway Program at UC Davis Continuing and Professional Education’s International and Access Programs. “I chose this program because I wanted to prepare for university life in the U.S. and improve my English skills, especially in academic and social settings.”
The Global Academic Pathway Program (GAPP) at UC Davis is a comprehensive, two-year program designed to equip international students with the academic and linguistic skills necessary for successful integration into U.S. higher education. Through a combination of preparatory coursework and personalized support from UC Davis, followed by transferrable credits completed at California community colleges, GAPP facilitates a seamless transition to junior-level (third-year) standing at a University of California campus or other U.S. university.
In September, Grace will transfer to UC San Diego as an economics major.
A Guided Path to Academic Success in the U.S.
GAPP stands out as a strategic pathway for international students aiming to pursue higher education in the United States by providing a clear roadmap to university admission. For students like Grace, the program’s engaging curriculum and personalized support help them transition smoothly into university life and build a strong foundation for long-term academic and professional success.
“The program gave me many chances to practice English through classes, activities and daily conversations,” she said. “The small class sizes allowed for personalized attention from teachers, and the supportive environment encouraged me to speak without fear of mistakes.”
Building Connections Through Culture and Community The program also emphasizes cultural integration and engagement with UC Davis students and campus activities, fostering intercultural communication and a sense of community.
Outside the classroom, Grace immersed herself in campus life, gaining meaningful experiences beyond academic and linguistic support.
“I joined fun campus events—which helped me meet people and explore my interests—and the program’s social activities helped me build lasting friendships,” she said.
For Grace, connecting with people from diverse backgrounds and learning about their cultures was the most valuable part of the program.
“These experiences made me more open-minded and confident,” she said. “And I’m proud of my change.”
Grace also took advantage of Davis’ warm climate and small-town vibe.
“Biking around the safe, friendly town was so convenient and fun. My friends and I explored cafés, parks and local events together,” she said. “And I loved Davis’ sunny weather—it made outdoor activities enjoyable.”

Gaining Confidence and Independence
GAPP gave Grace the foundation she needed to make her dreams come true. More than strengthening her linguistic abilities and academic skills, she’s gained the self-confidence she needs to succeed in this next chapter at UC San Diego.
“Coming to the U.S. alone and living on campus taught me independence and time management,” she said. “Experiencing campus life early through GAPP helped me feel more confident about my future college years.”
Her advice to others considering the Global Academic Pathway Program: Take advantage of every opportunity to practice speaking—even if your English isn’t perfect yet. She added that meeting new people, joining activities and finding things that interest you makes learning more fun.
“Don’t hesitate to try new things,” said Grace. “Stepping out of your comfort zone is how you grow.”
