Student Spotlight: Taichi Kitagawa
Home University: Meiji University, Japan
Field of Study: Business administration
Taichi Kitagawa, a recent graduate of the Global Study Program (GSP), chose UC Davis for his study abroad experience because of the university’s reputation in gender studies. “UC Davis is very famous for its gender diversity, and my research field is related to diversity.” Though Kitagawa initially struggled to adjust to a new culture and language, he quickly became accustomed to his new surroundings and embraced being a global learner.
What was your experience like in this program? What did you learn from your experience?
Through GSP, I learned so many things. This was my first time staying in another country, so everything was new to me. I saw many cultural differences. Sometimes I faced some difficulties, but my friends helped me a lot. What I really appreciated was that many students were so welcoming and friendly. I only stayed one year, but Bakuhatsu Taiko Dan (a student-run Japanese cultural drumming club at UC Davis) allowed me to become a member.
What was the most challenging part of the program?
The language barrier was the most difficult part of this program. I learned my major in my mother tongue, so everything was kind of new to me because it was in English. I could not talk well when I first came here. However, through classes, clubs and life here, I was able to gradually become accustomed to the program and make invaluable memories and friends. Now, I am proud of myself for completing this program.
What’s one of your most memorable experiences from the program?
It is hard to choose, but one of my most memorable experiences was being a member of Bakuhatsu Taiko Dan. Through the club activity, I learned the history of Japanese in California, made so many friends, did many performances and had many cultural exchanges. Members of this club treated me as if I were a regular student. We talked a lot, and they listened to me. I am so grateful to have spent such a meaningful time with them. If I were not in this club, I would have missed Japan a lot. I will never forget the memories that I've made with them.
What advice do you have for someone considering this program or a global experience, in general?
Be active and don't miss your chance. As you start your first step, everything will work well.
How do you think your program experiences will benefit you in the future?
I am sure my experience here will shape my future. I have my friends here and I know what I can do here, so I will come back again.
