Meet Ibrahim Bedrous
Student Experience Manager brings global perspective and passion to new role at UC Davis
“International education has shaped my entire life,” said Ibrahim Bedrous, Student Experience Manager for UC Davis Continuing and Professional Education’s International Programs. “It brings people together, breaks stereotypes and creates life-changing opportunities. Diversity is beautiful and learning from one another makes us all better humans.”
Ibrahim has more than 15 years of experience working in student affairs and international education. In his new role, he’ll work directly with students and campus partners across UC Davis to enhance the co-curricular experience for international students—connecting them to UC Davis resources and the broader California and U.S. culture.
“For many of our students, this will be their first real American experience, and I want to ensure it is welcoming, meaningful and transformative.”
Can you share a bit about your background and what drew you to international education?
I am from Egypt, and at the age of 16, I was an AFS YES exchange student in Wisconsin. I arrived not speaking a word of English, saw snow for the first time and quickly realized that life in rural Wisconsin was very different from what I’d seen in Hollywood movies.
My career began at the American University in Cairo, where I worked directly with large populations of international students, student governments and hundreds of student organizations. In the United States, I continued my career at the University of Redlands, supporting thousands of students through programming, orientation, leadership development, advising and community-building initiatives.
I’ve worked on one of the Fulbright programs in Egypt, served in a leadership role with AFS Intercultural Programs and I have traveled to many countries across Africa, Asia, Europe and the Americas for work and intercultural initiatives. I hold a B.A. in political science, a graduate diploma in international relations and an M.S. in organizational leadership.
What would you like students to know about your personal background?
On the personal side, my family is multilingual and multicultural. My wife is an Egyptian Spanish-language teacher who speaks Arabic, English and Spanish. My older Egyptian children speak Arabic and English, and my youngest was born here in the U.S.—we’re still waiting to see what language he decides to speak first.
My academic and professional journey has always centered on one thing: supporting students and helping them grow. I often say that working with students keeps me young—no matter how many white hairs show up.
What excites you most about your new role at UC Davis?
I’m excited about reimagining and elevating the co-curricular life for international students at UC Davis. The title “Student Experience Manager” gives me the flexibility to think big and develop strategic programming that help students feel at home, supported and inspired.
I’m also thrilled to collaborate with our many incredible partners—departments, student organizations, student government and community groups—to expand access and engagement opportunities for all international students.
How do you hope your work will impact international students?
My work is centered on connection, access and belonging. I plan to strengthen students’ access to resources across UC Davis, build partnerships with campus, and create engaging activities and cultural experiences. Ultimately, my goal is to help students leave UC Davis with memories, friendships and skills that will last a lifetime.
Is there anything else you’d like international students to know about you?
I’m talkative by nature. I love meeting people, learning about their cultures and talking about history. If you see me around campus, don’t hesitate to say hello! I’m always happy to chat, share stories and learn from others.
