Summer of Growth: A Season of Learning, Discovery and Global Connections

What a dynamic summer we had! With over a thousand students attending summer programs, every moment was eventful, and the International Center was filled with lots of learning, connecting and laughter.

We are grateful for our global partners who continue to help us to achieve our goal of creating impactful learning experiences. In the context of international education, this extends beyond the classroom. Every opportunity to confront the unknown is an opportunity to discover, learn, reflect and transform. The interactions between students, instructors and faculty, as well as with our International Programs team, reminds me of Oliver Wendell Holmes’ famous quote: “Man's mind, stretched to a new idea, never goes back to its original dimension.”

Our Pre-College domestic students studied pre-med, equine science, environmental toxicology, forensic science and many other disciplines in campus laboratories and learning centers. They spent two weeks on campus just like the freshmen students living in dorms, eating at UC Davis Dining Commons and riding their bikes to classes.

Students in our Global Research Experience in Advanced Technologies Program (GREAT Summer Research Program) worked diligently with campus faculty on research. This highly selective program, offered in collaboration with the UC Davis College of Engineering, is available to undergraduate students in a variety of science and technology disciplines from participating partner institutions around the world.

For our older adults with active minds, the Osher Lifelong Learning Institute (OLLI) gave members unforgettable opportunities to stay connected with peers through lifelong learning in exciting classes and field trips, including whale watching off the California coast and the art of sustainable winemaking.

Finally, a new Sustainable Agriculture Program drew a full class of international undergraduate students to study the latest methods in the field of agriculture.

It is a privilege to be an educator and design impactful programs for students of all ages. As the fall quarter begins, I wish you, our partners, an energetic and joyful season.
