One important step on the path to graduate school admission is preparing and sitting for two of the most common standardized graduate school admissions tests: the Graduate Record Examination (GRE) and the Graduate Management Admissions Test (GMAT). For non-native English speakers, the demands of these two exams can be particularly challenging. Designed to address the specific needs of non-native English speakers as they prepare to sit for the GRE/GMA, this online course identifies areas where the GRE and GMAT tests have the same or similar task requirements and focuses students’ attention on the necessary skills and strategies to perform well in those areas. 

Course Objectives and Content

  • Review test tasks and directions
  • Review sample tasks with answers
  • Discuss the progression of question selection and test taking through scanning, close analysis, task determination and answer choice
  • With a multifaceted and context-rich approach, analyze and utilize academic expressions and vocabulary with the purpose of making practical use of that vocabulary on test responses

Learning Outcomes

By the end of this course, students will be able to:

  • Recognize the directions and specific tasks of common GRE/GMAT test items
  • Read and write for GRE/GMAT test items under time pressure
  • Employ strategies and techniques to analyze GRE/GMAT tasks at both the language level and the reasoning level
  • Extend ability to focus on specific GRE/GMAT related tasks
  • Read and write critically in English to address GRE/GMAT related tasks
  • Employ strategies to identify the meaning and intention of common GRE/GMAT tasks
  • Use strategies to increase knowledge of academic vocabulary and vocabulary specific to GRE/GMAT
  • Develop and employ an individualized system for planning how to answer GRE/GMAT test questions to maximize score
