Campus Life

For International English and Professional Programs students, classes are usually held between 9 a.m. and 3:30 p.m. After class, you can enjoy activities at the Orchard Park Extension Center or join other UC Davis students for various activities on campus, such as:

  • Taking art and design classes at the Craft Center
  • Signing up with the Experimental College for a yoga, dance or martial arts class
  • Joining other organizations for international activities
  • Enjoying bicycling, golf, or jogging on campus or in town
  • Learning to ride a horse at the Equestrian Center
  • Experiencing Davis nightlife by going to the cinema, dancing or attending musical performances
  • Playing on an intramural sports team and playing against other UC Davis teams

Volunteer Experiences and Leadership Opportunities

Students at the intermediate levels and higher may choose an elective class called Volunteer Experiences. Students can volunteer their time in community organizations—mostly schools and nonprofit organizations—where they observe how people work together to achieve common goals. These experiences help international students gain a deeper understanding of U.S. culture and society, as well as develop their leadership skills.

Students keep journals of their observations and discuss issues such as workplace culture, effectiveness of meetings, decision-making, teamwork, customer relationships, marketing and more. Here are just a few of the areas in which students can volunteer and gain valuable work experience:

  • Education
  • Environment
  • Health care
  • Social work
  • Culture
  • Animal care
  • Youth and recreation

If students wish to explore other areas of interest, UC Davis Extension can assist them in locating a volunteer position to suit their individual needs.

Recreation Program Leaders

Our Recreation Program Leaders (RPLs) guide students through these various activities and adventures. RPLs offer students unique perspectives on American culture and student life at UC Davis, as well as opportunities for lasting friendships.

If these activities, clubs and trips aren't for you, don't worry, this is just a sample of what we offer. We are always adding new activities and trips to reflect our students' interests. We can also assist you in planning your own trips.
