In Level I, the first course in this two-course series, you’ll work through two cybersecurity scenarios: insider threat and exploiting a vulnerable website.

Insider Threat – In this first scenario, you’ll investigate the activities of an employee who was doing something suspicious on the internet while at work.

You’ll learn to:

  • Conduct a cybersecurity investigation
  • Analyze suspicious user behavior
  • Analyze computer network traffic using the NetworkMiner and Wireshark tools
  • Conduct online technical research
  • Present and discuss reports on a cybersecurity investigation

Exploit a Vulnerable Website – In this scenario, you’ll exploit a vulnerability on a web server by cracking the webmaster’s password in order to access the server with all the webmaster’s privileges, including password files.

You’ll learn to:

  • Think like an attacker
  • Exploit a website
  • Crack a password
  • Repair a common website vulnerability
  • Work with Burp Suite and John the Ripper, two tools used by cybersecurity professionals

Level I will run for four weeks from 4 to 5 p.m. PT Monday through Friday, in a structured meeting-style with a course mentor, followed by about two hours of independent work after each class, with optional office hours from 7 to 8 p.m. PT on weekdays.
